Drainage Contractor Tips

Driveway Drainage Solutions

Many homes today come with driveways that slope toward the garage, however, during rainstorms, water will flow back into your property from several sources that will include roofs, hillsides, and even your neighbor’s yard. Because concrete and asphalt are impermeable when water reaches your driveway, it will no longer be absorbed into the ground and often flows right back into your garage, or even worse, your home. However, not all is lost, our drainage contractor has added a few guidelines below that you can read to find out what the best solution will be for your drainage issue.

The Wrong Driveway Drainage Solution

Many homeowners believe they can resolve their own driveway drainage problems by moving dirt, or digging shallow trenches. These are temporary fixes, and will not effectively solve the problem, and, on occasion will actually make the problem worse. The majority of homeowners say they are unhappy with the results of these temporary solutions and will end up trying another approach within 1 year.

The Right Driveway Drainage Solutions

For some houses, more so the ones that sit below street level, it is difficult to resolve the drainage problem simply with the correct placement and slope alone. In such situations, driveway drains will have to be installed. A trench drain is often installed where the driveway meets the garage. This kind of drain is long and narrow and must run the full width of the driveway. A trench drain will need to be covered by a grate in order to keep it free of debris that will clog the pipe. Decorative grates are available and can be used as a unique design element. Smaller site drains can be used in specific areas of the driveway where the water is known to collect.
