Drainage Service Tips

DIY Yard Drainage Methods

Effective yard drainage is key to keeping both your yard and home dry. So if you choose not to hire a professional drainage service, there are a few DIY yard drainage methods that are inexpensive and easy to implement. The objective is to drain flooded areas in your yard and to prevent water from traveling towards your home’s foundation.

Replacing Hardscape With Drainage Materials

Hardscaping materials such as concrete and asphalt are great choices for patios or driveways. They ensure you and your vehicle are kept above wet ground, and they dry out quickly. However, the downside is they often divert water in the wrong direction. A concrete patio slab that is tilted toward your home will send water cascading towards your foundation. So consider replacing hardscape materials with either crushed or pea gravel to encourage better drainage

Adding a Channel Drain

When you have either a concrete or asphalt driveway that carries water in the wrong direction, stop it by installing a channel drain. To do this, start with a narrow trench that is cut into concrete or asphalt. Then, a long channel drain will need to be placed in the trench. When water hits it, it will be carried into another direction, that is well away from your home or garage.

Installing a French Drain

Surface water that travels across a lawn can be almost impossible to control, especially if it’s originating somewhere off of your property. Fortunately, there is an inexpensive way of managing surface water, which is with a French drain. This is a trench that is filled with permeable materials like gravel atop a perforated PVC pipe. Water will flow through the gravel and into the PVC pipe, which in turn will carry it away.
