Preventative Maintenance Tips for Your Home’s Drains
Maintaining your drains will go a long way to ensuring that the health of your home’s plumbing will go on for years to come. There are several ways that you can do this, however, the best and easiest way is by practicing regular drain maintenance. This is why our Kapa Plumbing & Drainage Service drainage service has provided a few easy tips and solutions for you to try to keep your drains in good working order.
Never put oil or grease down the drain
First things first: you should never pour liquid oils, or grease down your drains. When they cool, they become solid and will stick to the interior of your drains and result in clogs. Other items that you should never put down your drains include:
Eggshells
Their edges get snagged on other things and will eventually cause blockages.
Coffee grounds
They will stick to pipe wall surfaces and become a paste.
Medications
Not safe as they will eventually make their way into water reservoirs.
Always keep your drains clean
If you would like to maintain the integrity of your drains and pipes, stay away from the liquid cleaners, as they do not know the difference between the clogs and the pipes. When chemical drain cleaners are finished dealing with clogs, they will often carry on eating away at your pipes.
Ditch the grease to prevent future incidents
Grease will back up in your drains, however, you can deal with this using some detergent and some boiling water. Boil a large pot of water, and apply at least one tablespoon of detergent liquid into your drain and then pour the boiling water in. The boiling water will melt the grease while the detergent will help to break down the grease and oil, you may have to do this a few times to get the full effect.
