How to know the wrong questions
Some business owners will often prey upon either the elderly and widowed. They will train their employees on how to spot a susceptible victim, and teach them to ask questions like “Is your husband home?” or “Are you divorced?” Once they get the answer they are looking for, they descend.
Watching for evidence
Employees of dishonest companies are taught techniques that will convince homeowners that they have problems that are more severe than they actually are. Some will travel in pairs while one goes upstairs obtaining information about the customer. At the same time, the other one stays downstairs spreading dirt in certain areas they say indicates a broken sewer pipe which is forcing the dirt through the concrete.
Others will carry bags of rocks to put in house traps or cleanouts so that they will be assured of future stoppages in the line. After the second or third stoppage, they will show the homeowner the rocks they took out from the pipe, and say it is damaged, and the pipe needs to be jetted and inspected with a video.

Both video inspections and jetting are invaluable tools in our industry when appropriately used, however, when placed in unscrupulous hands, they can cause total misery. Video cameras can be used in finding buried septic systems or to inspect the condition of buried pipes in order to determine proper maintenance schedules. When a corrupt salesperson has control of the camera, they could be playing pre-taped inspections of a pipe that was in bad condition and passing it off as your own.
