Sump Pump Repair Tips
Most homeowners that have a sump pump never give it a second thought, however, even though this piece of equipment is quite durable, sump pump repair will eventually be needed if you do not perform any routine maintenance on it.
What could possibly go wrong?
If the drainage mechanism fails, would you know what to do when your sump pump overflows? Understanding how your pump works and what to do to troubleshoot can save your basement from serious water damage.
The most common cause of a sump pump overflowing is a combination of torrential rain and a power outage, however, it is not always that simple. When the sump pump stops working, one of the following steps can help to reduce the chances of basement flooding.
Making sure it has power
If you have power in the house, however, the pump isn’t working, check for a tripped circuit or blown fuse. Also, think about investing in a battery backup system, this will ensure that the pump keeps working even in a power outage.
Resetting the unit
Pull the pump’s plug out, leave it to sit for a few minutes, then plug it back in, and try to activate the device. If this trick does work, you should still get the pump inspected by a qualified technician.
Try to restart the motor
Lift the cover of the basin, and pull on the float switch. If this fails to restart the motor and you’ve already checked the power, you could be facing a mechanical failure.
Look at the float switch
Water can often seep into the plastic housing of the float switch. Check this for signs of wear and tear, and check its bracket to see if it moves freely. Otherwise, it won’t activate the pump.
