Sump Pump Winter Maintenance
Your sump pump is what bails you out in the rainy seasons. So when winter and freezing temperatures come around, unless you want to pay for a costly sump pump replacement, make sure you take good care of it! Lucky for you, the following contains a list of handy tips that you can use to keep your sump pump in good working condition over the winter months.
Maintaining Your Sump Pump Through the Winter
Unfortunately, you can’t control how cold the winter gets or how much snow will come; however, you can be proactive when protecting your sump pump from winter’s worst times.
Remove your sump pump’s discharge hose before the winter. When you know your region will receive a long period of cold weather, remove the hose that connects your sump pump to the discharge pipe, and leave it off. If water were to freeze in the hose, it would be unusable until it has had time to thaw, not to mention damaging the hose.
Only connect the hose when the warmer temperatures come back. If you decide to remove your hose in the winter, remember to reattach it when any period of warm weather returns, as your sump pump will be no good if it can’t take the water that has seeped in back outside!
Always have an extra discharge hose close. This tip is not only for the winter months; it can be a replacement. If you have two discharge hoses, you don’t need to remove the one already connected to your sump pump when winter arrives. So if it freezes, remove it, use the spare and leave the other one to thaw out.
