How to Know if You Need Sump Pump Replacement or Repair?
One of the biggest mistakes homeowners can make is to neglect their sump pump. Sadly, like most things, sump pumps are not built to last forever and will need to be properly maintained, and periodical sump pump replacement will be needed.
It’s Old
While this may seem obvious, most homeowners don’t know how old their sump pump actually is. A general rule of thumb is if it is at least 7 years old, or it has been more than 7 years since it was replaced, then now is the time.
You can check the owner’s manual but don’t be surprised if you do not find any specific numbers. Sump pump manufacturers will never guarantee the lifespan of their product, simply because they can’t. The life expectancy of a sump pump depends on where you live, how much, and how hard it needs to work.
Which is why it is better to air on the side of caution. Most insurance companies advise yearly inspections of your sump pump. This should give you a better idea of its age and when it will need to be replaced.
It’s Rusty
Visible rust is a sure sign it is time for a replacement. You may be mistaken into thinking that rust is from battery corrosion, however, it can be due to bacteria. This type of bacteria, known as Iron bacteria, causes a discolored and dangerous gel. This gel isn’t dangerous to people, however, it can clog your sump pump.
It’s Loud
You should never hear any strange noises coming from your sump pump. If you do hear loud or excessive noises, it is probably in need of repair. Most likely, you will be dealing with damaged or worn parts that will need to be replaced. If you suspect the noise is the motor, your sump pump may have a failed bearing.
