Testing the Sump Pump

Cleaning the pump
Firstly and most importantly, unplug the unit. Then, take off the pump’s lid when applicable, and check inside. Remove any dirt, gravel, sand, or debris from the opening. If the incoming drainage lines are blocked, it will be almost impossible for water to channel into the sump pit.
Checking for Worn Parts
Parts will become worn out over time, preventing the pump from working in the event of a flooded basement. The float switch is typically the most common part that will fail, and most manufacturers recommend replacing it every two years. Also, make sure to check for any corrosion and clean the inlet screen. It is generally located at the base of the pump.
