Sump Pump Repair Tips

Has Your Sump Pump Stopped Working?

Although the average lifespan of a sump pump is around 10 years, sump pump problems are common can often be repaired easily. Sump pumps are very efficient at protecting the basement of your home or office against the likes of flood and water damage. However, when a sump pump suddenly breaks down, and you don’t have enough time to call in a professional sump pump repair technician, knowing a few basic troubleshooting tips will prove invaluable.

The Check Valve

All too often, a sump pump does not work properly because the check valve was not fitted correctly. The check valve will often jam due to debris, and when this does not work properly, the water will go back into the basin and place more stress on the pump. So make sure to check the valve and clean it. Also, make sure that the valve is not pointing towards the pump, as it needs to be pointing away from it. You can add a check valve to the line when one is not present.

The Float

The continued function of a sump pump will depend on the float. This is a ball-shaped object that rises with the increase of the water level in your basement. When the float rises to a certain height, the pump kicks in and starts to work. The most common problem associated with the failure of a sump pump is the float. This is often due to the deposit of debris or some other reason, that prevents the float from rising with the water level. If you want to prevent this, make sure you check and clean it on a regular basis, or at the very least each week.
