Through these interactions, I’ve realized that a lot of people believe in plumbing “facts” that actually turn out to be plain fiction. Here are a few of the plumbing myths that you shouldn’t believe:
Myth #1: “Flushable” items can be flushed down the toilet
It’s easy to believe this myth especially when you come across products that are marketed to be flushable. However, the marketing messages that are used for these products actually don’t tell the whole truth!
Flushable cat litter, for instance, can be safely flushed all by itself because it’s made to be water-soluble. However, when it’s already mixed with cat waste, it should never be flushed since the toxins and parasites that are found in feces can enter the water supply and cause health issues. Flushable wipes, on the other hand, might smoothly go down your drains, but they don’t break down easily and can, therefore, create clogs in your drain lines.
Myth #2: It’s okay to use wire hangers to unclog your drains.
Wire hangers might look similar to plumbing snakes, but they’re definitely not interchangeable. This comes from the fact that wire hangers often have sharp edges that can scratch your pipes and make it easier for scum and other substances to build up and cause blockage. The hanger’s sharp edge can even poke holes through your pipes if they’re old and brittle, which can lead to drainage issues. So, instead of using a wire hanger, invest in a proper auger or plumbing snake. Better yet, hire a professional plumber to ensure that your drain will be properly cleaned or unclogged.
