Tips on How to Repair a Submersible Sump Pump by Repositioning the Float

Sump Pump Repair Tips

Sump pumps are considered the hero in regions that receive heavy rain, a high water table, or other sources of basement or crawlspace water. Submersible sump pumps, and not pedestal pumps, are put on the bottom of a pit or basin. Attached to this is a float, that will trigger the pump. The float system is either a ball float with a tether arm with a float pivoting on the end of a rod. If the pump refuses to start or stop, a tangled or obstructed float could be responsible, so before you being any time-consuming sump pump repair jobs, read the following first.

  • Disconnect or unplug the sump pump from the power source.

  • Remove the basin lid.

  • Check the pump and float positioning. The pump could have moved in the basin. The float switch will often be affected if this happens. Determine if the float is tangled, or obstructed by debris, or is too close to the basin wall to be able to move freely.

  • Remove any debris you see in the basin. Debris will often interfere with the movement of the float. Debris is most prevalent if the basin was left uncovered or debris-filled water has drained into the basin.

  • Move the pump in the basin so that it is once again level and correctly positioned. The float must have as much space as possible to move freely. Untangle the float when necessary, however, don’t move the pump that much so it bends or puts stress on the discharge pipe.

  • Plug the pump back in.

  • Test the float and sump pump, simply pour some water into the sump basin so it will trigger the pump, make sure it float moves freely and the sump pump comes on when the water is high enough. Let the pump remove the water and make sure it shuts off when there is only a few inches of water left.

  • Replace the basin lid to the sump.
